Every Thursday we have a beautiful studio open from 8:30-11pm at 7th Heaven Yoga in Berkeley. This is a big space, so we’re excited for this contact improv jam to welcome other somatic arts (like acro-yoga, capoeira, tai chi) into the creative soup. The soundscape is varied, with a mix of silence, downtempo/ambient recorded tracks, and tasteful live music.
Also, please to be in touch if you’re interested in leading a pre-jam class/lab, would like to offer some live music, or have any other ideas or suggestions for the time/space.

Spring Workshop with Michael Doonan
Contact Improv for Actors explores the fundamentals of physical preparation through stretch, strength, and alignment; and the relationship of the actor to the physical environment, to the group, and to a specific ‘other’. The result is an instinctual, unpredictable, and undeniable presence.
Every actor has the potential to develop these instincts, skills, and presence regardless of size, weight, or previous training, and this is achieved through a combination of physical and mental preparation.
Michael Doonan holds an M.F.A. in Acting from UC Irvine, where he now teaches Contact Improvisation with Annie Loui, a heralding force in this work. Michael has studied with international theatre artists at the Grotowski Institute in Poland and also with the Moscow Art Theatre and Harvard/ A.R.T. in Cambridge, MA.

The class is designed for both those new to CI and for experienced dancers.
We will investigate and hone useful CI skills such as: falling with confidence (based on aikido principles); effective weight sharing techniques (making yourself light, supporting weight with ease); maintaining a functional alignment and structure; cultivating an aware and powerful center; harnessing momentum; listening kinesthetically to ourselves and others; and easy and fun ways to enter and exit dances.

We develop skills in contact improvisation while finding the freedom in the form. Support, alignment, leading/following, upside down work, lightness, moving without manipulation, vision exploration, sound, solo, duet, trios, and different improvisational scores are some of our investigations. http://youtu.be/JlJ3DSZHbaQ
This class will introduce students to understanding one’s own body and others through touch. We will focus on listening to other bodies and to softening the edges of our own body. We will explore the movements which are fundamental to our development, such as crawling, rolling, pushing, and pulling, to connect to the earth and to feel our center. We will also find ways to let go of self-control by leaning and sharing weight with others. We practice lots of contact in the lower level first and gradually building up to the higher level so that we feel more comfortable exploring and challenging. We will empower ourselves to go beyond the norm, to free ourselves from gravity, to learn to depart from the vertical position, to be upside down and to fly.

The Open Movement Jam consistently draws 40 to 50 contact and non-contact movement improvisers and dance-friendly musicians, meeting absolutely all Monday evenings at the Childrens Aid Society in the center of Greenwich Village, NYC. We are open to all sorts of movers — including those who may be trained in or trying out various dance forms, contact improv, theater, martial arts, yoga and other styles — and welcome participants with all sorts of physical capabilities. We continue to mix many out-of-town visitors and other newcomers with semi-regulars and regular participants, meeting in this enormous, beautiful space.
The jam and its predecessors have 40 years of continuous participation:
- Carrier Pigeon events of the 1960s (conceived by Kenneth King, still the most accomplished and supportive improviser around) Robert Wilson School of Byrds of the 1970s (from which more than a dozen of the collaborators still participate, including the great Christopher K.)
-
- Open Movement at PS 122 from the 1970s-90s (founded by Charles Dennis, who regularly contributes his creative energy and ideas) and The Jam at Judson Church 1999-2001 (founded by Bill Jacobson, who brought the jam to the center of the Village and participates whenever in town.)
-
Thank you to all who bring the wonderful energy that makes this event.
We now suggest a $5 contribution.

All movers and shakers are cordially invited to dance to the sounds of the acoustic improv musicians at the Open Music Circle, now six years old! We meet regularly in Brooklyn and Manhattan. There is no structured agenda and no director. The musicians sit in a circle or semi-circle and start with silence. Then someone begins to play or sing or move. Then we watch, listen to each other and, when we want, begin to play, vocalize or move accordingly, and so it goes. Finally we end the evening with silence.
To attend, first sign up for free on www.meetup.com and then join the Circle at www.meetup.com/openmusiccircle and finally rsvp there for the particular gathering you wish to attend. For additional informat0on email openmusiccircle@earthlink.net.
To help pay for on-line fees, supplies, instrument repairs, our Manhattan rent, and other operational expenses, a donation is requested from musicians and dancers alike at the end of the evening in the amount of $ 5 at each Circle in Brooklyn and $10 at each Circle in Manhattan.
In Brooklyn, we meet at the Circle Space, 485 Ocean Avenue; in Manhattan, we meet at the New York Insight Meditation Center, 28 West 27th St.
We meet on Sunday nights: on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, we meet in Brooklyn from 7 – 9 PM; on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month we meet in Manhattan from 8:15 – 10 PM.
There are usually one or two jams a month in Rochester, some at the Physikos Movement Studio, and some on the University of Rochester campus. All are welcome to attend!

What’s Contact Improv you say? Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance technique in which points of physical contact provide the starting point for exploration through movement improvisation. Contact Improvisation is a form of dance improvisation and is one of the best-known and most characteristic forms of postmodern dance. A jam is a creative space for open improvisation, governed by mutual respect and awareness. A jam is an opportunity to play, to research, to experiment, to express, to work it out, to connect with others. Dancing alone, in duets, or in groups, we stretch our capacity to listen and lead as we follow the dance.

“Contact Improv is a movement form where dancers move to follow the play of touch. Gravity and the floor are constant partners. Human touch unites the forces that act upon the body with the sensations they produce within the body.” -Steve Paxton

Rhode Island's only contact jam…we are a small jam but we have a good time. Our usual format is a led warm up followed by open dancing followed by, sometimes, a round robin or other similar structure to end the evening.
Come join us for some fun dancing. Open to all experience levels.
Free!
Usually first and third Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:30pm, however, our dance space is in a Hillel (Jewish center) associated with Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design so between working around Jewish holidays and coordinating with the academic calendar, our schedule can be a little unpredictable so you are encouraged to check before traveling to the jam.
This jam begins with a ten minute opening circle, the creation of a score, and a short warm-up. Brand new beginners always welcome, instruction provided. Feel free to come and go as you please, score is written out, and provides a loose structure.
