Every Thursday we have a beautiful studio open from 8:30-11pm at 7th Heaven Yoga in Berkeley. This is a big space, so we’re excited for this contact improv jam to welcome other somatic arts (like acro-yoga, capoeira, tai chi) into the creative soup. The soundscape is varied, with a mix of silence, downtempo/ambient recorded tracks, and tasteful live music.

Also, please to be in touch if you’re interested in leading a pre-jam class/lab, would like to offer some live music, or have any other ideas or suggestions for the time/space.

Spend an early lunch hour (or hour-plus) in a playful atmosphere, dancing contact improvisation and/or exploring the wealth of interesting equipment (including aerial) and people at Athletic Playground. (Nice clean floor too!)

Everyone welcome, from “beginner” to “advanced with beginner’s mind.”

With the blessings of the Athletic Playground management, this gathering takes place during “open gym” time at the Playground, where non-members can always drop in from 9:30am until 12:00 noon for only $5.

Spring Workshop with Michael Doonan

Contact Improv for Actors explores the fundamentals of physical preparation through stretch, strength, and alignment; and the relationship of the actor to the physical environment, to the group, and to a specific ‘other’. The result is an instinctual, unpredictable, and undeniable presence.

Every actor has the potential to develop these instincts, skills, and presence regardless of size, weight, or previous training, and this is achieved through a combination of physical and mental preparation.

Michael Doonan holds an M.F.A. in Acting from UC Irvine, where he now teaches Contact Improvisation with Annie Loui, a heralding force in this work. Michael has studied with international theatre artists at the Grotowski Institute in Poland and also with the Moscow Art Theatre and Harvard/ A.R.T. in Cambridge, MA.

Contact Improvisation class at 7pm, taught by Ron Estes, Jess Humphrey, or Leslie Seiters. Occasional guest teachers.

Jam follows from 8pm till 10pm

Small, but very dedicated community. Almost always, Kris Apple takes class and then does amazing things with his violin to support the jam.

DanceJam is a by-product of the expressive arts movement that began in the early '70s along with the post-modern and contact improvisation dance movements. In San Diego County, our community has been coming together in the dance for over thirty-five years. We meet three times a week – on Friday nights in North Park, and on Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights in Encinitas.

20 years in SF: International faculty teach the SF CI Series every Tuesday followed by 3-hour Jam, co-sponsored by HumilitySwim.org and CounterPULSE. Space is wheelchair accessible, easy to reach by public transit (Civic Ctr BART stop and 14/Mission MUNI bus). Website posts each month’s class teacher and any holiday closures. The improvisation dance jam is every Wednesday night on a drop-in basis at Shotwell Studios in SF’s Mission district.

This Jam Session is an opportunity for dancers, musicians, and other artists to collaborate in an open space. There are no rules or structure for the evening. Just enjoy the process or be an audience. This venue was created to provide a space for artists who want to explore the endless possibilities of improv and contact improv. Feel free come and go as you wish. All ages and levels are welcome. Live accompanists and other artists is highly appreciated for the contribution of the evening. We hope to continue this Jam as an ongoing event monthly and that you will join us whenever you can. Thank you.

The LA contact jam is every Sunday evening in Santa Monica. We have a short opening circle around 6:30pm and a closing circle at 9:00pm, but you may arrive and leave at any time.

Once a month, we have a "Be or Bring a Beginner Jam," where the first hour is a contact class open to all levels. However, you are welcome to come and start jamming right away if you prefer.
